QUIZ NIGHT
Carol is organising a Quiz Night on Saturday 28th March starting at 7.30pm. Teams will comprise a maximum 6 players and please could everybody bring one plate of food.  Give Carol a ring if you need to know what to bring and also to register your team name asap.  We will be having a raffle on the night and would very much appreciate any unwanted Christmas/Birthday gifts etc.  We look forward to seeing lots of you there.

Memorial Trophy
Congratulations to the Town’s Y Notts team who have got through to the semi-final and will play Old Basing Beavers on Saturday 14th March 6.30pm.  The other semi-final is between Oakey and AWRE. Should be a good evening so do come along and cheer them on.

Our alterations and improvements are nearly finished and looking really good.  The council have now resurfaced the footpath so the outside is also looking very smart.  We will be sending out some dates when we will be asking you to come and help us give the clubhouse a good clean when the builders have moved out.  So get the Marigolds out and be ready to come and join us even if only for an hour or so – coffee makers are always welcome!

The Club will open on the weekend of 18th & 19th April.  From 10am on Saturday for a Roll Up and an Opening Spoon Drive starting at 2.30pm on the Sunday.

As you are aware the ‘Grand Opening’ of our new facilities is on Saturday 30th May. The provisional programme for the day will be:
9.30-10.30             Tea and Coffee
10.45                     Welcome
11-12.30                Demo of equipment and play
12.30-2.00             Light lunch for players
2.30-4.00              Games with club payers
4.30                       Light tea

This will be followed by an ‘Open Day’ on Saturday 13th June when we hope to encourage folk to come along and try bowling.  Both these occasions are opportunities for the club to showcase our new facilities and we very much hope members will come along and give their support

On 7th March from 10am Loddon Vale are hosting a Disabled Bowls Day which some of you may be interested to go along and watch.

If you have changed your land line or mobile number please let Barry Blake know asap as he is currently updating the fixture books which will be available at the EGM on Friday 3rd April.

The final ‘Bumper’ Meat Raffle Draw for the winter period will take place at the AGM on Friday 3rd April.  As usual tickets are available at the Friday night Social evenings.

The following day, Saturday 4th April, will be our annual Spring Cleaning Day when there will be jobs to be done both indoors and out to make the club ready for the new season. Again, an hour or more of your time would be most welcome.

The BDBA are holding their Spring Meeting on Tuesday 17th March 7.30pm at Kingsclere bowling Club.

We are still looking for a Captain for the Friday BDBA ‘A’ team – male or female - help can be given with catering.  Please consider taking on this position and speak to any committee member for details.

A Golfer’s Wisdom: A young man was just about to start a round of golf when an elderly gentleman asked if he could join him. Despite misgivings that the older player might slow him down, he agreed. To his surprise and delight the old man was a quick player. He only ever hit his drives about 150 yards but was no slouch along the fairways.  Eventually they reached the tenth hole, where the younger player hooked his drive into a plantation, leaving himself with a tall pine tree standing between his ball and the green. Seeing his predicament, the old man volunteered, ‘When I was your age, I use to hit the ball right over that tree to the green’. Without stopping to think, so eager was he to show off his skills, the young man took an almighty swing at the ball and then watched in horror as it thudded into the tree trunk and rebounded twenty yards behind him.

The old man remained silent for a few seconds before remarking: ‘Of course, when I was your age that pine tree was only three feet tall’.

Fund Raising: Cheque for £660.00 received from the John Lewis Community Matters Scheme.  Thank you to those who put their green tokens into our container. Looks like quite a lot of the general public also supported us.
We have now raised over £2,000 towards a wheelchair and other specialist equipment for a variety of disabilities.

Building extension and alterations:  In the last couple of weeks the builders have broken through from the new extension and refigured the toilet areas. The ramp onto the green beyond the clubhouse is complete and looking good. Ramps and door alterations to clubhouse and changing rooms are well under way, sensor lighting along the path parallel to the road installed and the committee are hopeful that floodlights will also be installed (subject to planning permission). The council have just informed us that the footpath around the tennis courts and bowling green is shortly to be resurfaced. So, as you can see, lots of improvements going on.

The second round of the Memorial Trophy at Loddon Vale was played on 14th December. Unfortunately, both our teams were beaten. The ‘Y Knots’ had a very close game against AWRE and the ‘Hobgoblins’ had a not so close game against Oakley. The next round will be on 4th January 6.30pm. It was good to see the Town being well supported and it is much appreciated – look forward to seeing you again on the 4th!

Your committee members, captains and selectors work very hard for the club and thanks go to those who are continuing their roles and to those who have volunteered for 2019.  However, we are still in need of captains for the Friday men’s teams.  Please speak to Roger (Bas 421849) or any other committee member if you feel able to take this on – you will have plenty of support.

Contact Details:  2020 fixture books will be ready for the EGM on Friday 12th April .  If you have updated your email/address/telephone/mobile, or know of anyone who has, please tell us so we can ensure you receive all communications and that our fixture book is as up-to-date as possible.  Also, we would be really grateful for donations of second class stamps for postal newsletters – thank you.

Friendly Match:  On Saturday 15th February we have a friendly match against Loddon Vale IBC starting at 2.15pm.  If you would like to play give Roger a ring on 01256 421849 / 07771616468.  It would be great to see some of you popping in to support the team during the afternoon.

It was good to see so many of you at Jim Rainbow’s funeral. I know Trish and the family appreciated your support.

Once again it is with sadness that we learnt of the death of a former member, Cyril Smith, just before Christmas.  Cyril was a member of the club and some of our older members will fondly remember him. Our thoughts are with his wife, Wendy, and family at this difficult time.

May all your troubles last as long as your New Year’s resolutions.

Newsletter - 28th January 2020

Friday 31st January: This Friday, Carol will be having the first meat raffle of 2020 at our usual Friday night social.  Do come along enjoy a drink and a chat and the chance to win a joint for the weekend! It will also give you the opportunity to see the progress being made on the extension and outside improvements.

BDBA Friday Night Men’s Rinks:  This season the league is reverting to 2 divisions. Barry Blake has kindly stepped forward to manage the ‘B’ team. However, we are still looking for a Captain for the ‘A’ team.  This does not necessarily have to be a man and help can be given with catering. Please consider taking on this position and speak to Roger for details.

Competition Entry Evenings:  On Friday evenings 7th and 14th February Stuart, Barbara and Joyce will be at the club with BDBA, Whitchurch and North Hants Ladies competition entry forms. If you are unable to attend either evening please contact the relevant representative.

Competition Entry Evening:  On Friday evenings 14th February Stuart, Barbara and Joyce will be at the club with BDBA, Whitchurch and North Hants Ladies competition entry forms. If you are unable to attend and have not already completed your entry please contact the relevant representative.
Steve Harris will also be there with club competition entry forms - closing date for these is  12th April.

Building extension and alterations:  The builders have done a great job and should be finished in the next couple of weeks. The ramps are complete and doors to clubhouse and changing rooms nearly so. In the toilet areas the flooring is down and painting underway - all looking good. The council have started resurfacing the footpaths and with our new sensor lights access to the club will be much safer.

When the work is complete the club will need a really good clean top to bottom! We shall be asking members to help us with this and will send out dates when we need ‘cleaners’. If you can spare an hour or two on these occasions it will be greatly appreciated.

BOWLS:  We are keen to acquire sets of smaller bowls for the club.  Sizes 00, 0, 1 and 2 would be ideal.  If you have any or know of anyone who no longer requires them we would delighted to receive them.

Newsletter - 8th January 2020

Firstly, some corrections to previous newsletter!
Men’s selectors should read: Roger Haynes, Neil Clarke & Steve Harris.
Subscriptions were increased last year and will remain the same this year.
EGM date was not the Easter weekend – correct date Friday 3rd April. We hope to see many of you there to see the alterations and improvements that have been made to the clubhouse, changing rooms and green.

Saturday 4th April will be our usual Spring Cleaning Day to ready the club for the new season. Even an hour of your time on that day would be much appreciated.

The builders are making good progress and we are not anticipating the club having to close until late January early February for perhaps one week.  Therefore, Friday evening socials will continue as usual and we’ll advise any changes. However, please be aware that for the time being the ladies cloakroom will be unisex whilst the builders make internal changes to the gents and new disabled toilet.

We have a couple of events coming up in March – Quiz Night and the Meat Raffle final bumper draw.  There will be an ordinary raffle on both occasions so if anyone has any unwanted Christmas presents etc or can contribute a prize Carol would be most grateful. Please drop into the club on a Friday night between now and then.  Dates and details will be sent out shortly.

We will have the usual January and February meat raffle draws which we anticipate being drawn on the last Friday of each month, depending on club availability due to building works.

Contact Details:  2020 fixture books will be ready for the EGM on Friday 3rd April .  If you have updated your email/address/telephone/mobile, or know of anyone who has, please tell us so we can ensure you receive all communications and that our fixture book is as up-to-date as possible.  Also, we would be really grateful for donations of second class stamps for postal newsletters – thank you.

Saturday 30th May is the Official Opening Day for our new extension and improvements. Please put the date in your diary NOW as we anticipate this being a big event with local dignitaries and representatives of various disability organisations attending. We hope that members will give their support both before and on the day to make it a success.  We will keep you up to date with arrangements for the day and how you can help.

The next rounds of the Memorial Trophy are on 25th January & 22nd February 6.30pm at Loddon Vale. Last Saturday the ‘Y Knots’ had a good win against Howard Park whilst ‘The Misfits’ lost against Howard Park. Good luck to everyone in the next 2 rounds.

Ever wonder:
Why sheep don’t shrink when it rains?
Why they don’t make the whole plane out of the material used to make the black box?
Why women can’t put on mascara with their mouths closed?
Why they are called apartments when they are all stuck together?
Why ‘abbreviated’ is such a long word?
